Goucher College breaks ground on new Science Center

TOWSON, MD—Goucher College celebrated the groundbreaking for the Judy C. Lewent ’70 Science Center on April 24, 2025. The 44,000-square-foot, $50 million project is expected to open in Fall 2027.

The Lewent Science Center will be a LEED-rated addition to the Hoffberger Science building. It will feature state-of-the-art labs and learning spaces designed to support science education.

The groundbreaking ceremony drew a crowd of over 100 students, faculty, staff, alumnae/i, community leaders, and government officials. Among them were Maryland Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller, former U.S. Senator Ben Cardin, Maryland House of Delegates member Cathi Forbes, and Baltimore County Executive Katherine Klausmeier. They joined Goucher College President Kent Devereaux and Robert Bull Jr. ’93, a Board of Trustees member and Campaign Chair, for the historic moment.

President Devereaux spoke at the event, emphasizing the college’s commitment to science education. “As one of the first colleges in the country to offer science classes to women and with nearly every current student taking a science course, Goucher continues to build on its innovative history with the new Lewent Science Center as a place of discovery for generations of students to come,” Devereaux said. “Our graduates are global changemakers, and the knowledge they acquire here will impact our region and beyond as they pursue careers and advanced degrees while making a meaningful impact on their communities.”

The new facility will allow for expanded research opportunities for faculty and students. The new building will host classes in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, environmental science, physics, applied math, data analytics, cognitive psychology, and computer science.

George Greco, Goucher College professor and chair of the chemistry department, highlighted the impact of the new center on science education. “The Lewent Science Center will allow Goucher to continue its long tradition of educating future leaders in science and medicine,” Greco said. “We will be able to teach students using cutting edge pedagogy and provide them with the opportunity to work on high impact research projects.”

The Lewent Science Center will also provide space for the growth of Goucher’s Summer Science Research program and the Post-Baccalaureate Premedical Program.
