ANNAPOLIS, MD—The Maryland Freedom Caucus on Tuesday slammed calls for the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia to Maryland.
Garcia is a 29-year-old from El Salvador who was deported in March. His case has prompted a legal showdown over immigration policy in the United States.
The Supreme Court has ruled that Garcia was wrongly deported and that the Trump administration should help facilitate his return to Maryland.
The White House, however, maintains that Kilmar Abrego Garcia is a member the MS-13 gang, a designated foreign terrorist organization, adding that he “will never live in the U.S. again.
“Despite what some in the press would have you believe, Mr. Garcia is not a Marylander,” reads a press release from the the caucus. “He is a Salvadoran national, in our country illegally, with a troubling record of domestic violence and strong evidence of MS-13 gang affiliation. He was caught transporting undocumented individuals from Texas to Maryland— driving on an expired license obtained here in Maryland, where illegal immigrants are eligible for licenses. Mr. Garcia may have lived here, but he had no legal standing to be in the United States. His country, El Salvador, has indicated they are unwilling to release him. Despite what some may want we cannot tell another sovereign nation what they must do.”
“Mr. Garcia entered our country illegally and he certainly should not be welcomed back,” the press release continues. “Senator Chris Van Hollen’s trip to El Salvador was a radical attempt to garner sympathy and support for a criminal illegal immigrant. He joins Representative Glenn Ivey and all the Congressional and State Maryland Democrats in standing with Mr. Garcia, while shamefully ignoring the very real victims of criminal behavior by illegal aliens. The Maryland Angel Mothers and Fathers of Rachel Morin, Kayla Hamilton, and recently murdered Lesbia Ramirez Guerra would likely prefer their representatives stand up to protect our citizens rather than making the state a haven for criminal illegal immigrants.”
“The Maryland Freedom Caucus stands behind President Trump’s immigration policies and supports law enforcement in keeping Maryland safe,” the press release concludes. “Our members fight every year for greater compliance with ICE and against weakening of our cooperation with federal immigration law, like the near-elimination of the 287g program this past legislative session. Our congressional representatives and senators should do likewise.”
