Gas prices fall for first time in a month

BALTIMORE, MD—The national average gas price in the U.S. has fallen for the first time in nearly a month, according to GasBuddy. The decline is attributed to a drop in oil prices, which have been impacted by concerns over the impact of U.S. tariffs and OPEC+ restoring production faster than expected.

The national average gas price fell 8.2 cents compared to last week, reaching $3.13 per gallon. This is still 7.8 cents higher than a month ago but 46.9 cents lower than a year ago. The national average diesel price has dropped 4.8 cents to $3.546 per gallon.

“While I do expect gas prices to continue trending lower, any abrupt change in the current tariff situation could eventually bring the decline to a halt,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

De Haan also noted that gas prices typically reach their yearly peak around April 10, suggesting that we may have already witnessed the peak of gas prices for 2025.

Oil prices rebounded last week after President Trump announced a 90-day pause on tariffs for most countries while the trade war with China continues. U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced an exemption for Chinese-made items like smartphones, computers, and chips over the weekend. This optimism has led to an increase in oil prices, with WTI crude oil up 93 cents to $62.43 per barrel and Brent crude oil up 90 cents to $65.66 per barrel.
