Governor Moore to lead trade mission to Japan, South Korea

ANNAPOLIS, MD—Governor Wes Moore will lead a state trade mission to Japan and South Korea next month to promote Maryland’s growing industries in quantum technology, life sciences, and aerospace.

The governor will be joined by representatives from the Maryland Department of Commerce, the Maryland Department of Transportation, the Secretary of State, and the private sector.

The mission will take place from April 11-18, with the first part of the trip focused on Japan before traveling to South Korea.

“Japan and South Korea are two of Maryland’s closest trade partners. And now, we are building on that strong foundation to identify new areas of common interest and mutual benefit,” said Gov. Moore in a statement. “I don’t leave Maryland without bringing new opportunities back with me–and this trade mission is no different. Our trip overseas marks the next chapter in our work to grow our economy and build new pathways to work, wages, and wealth for all Marylanders.”

The focus of the mission reflects Maryland’s emergence as a leader in quantum technology research, life sciences, and aerospace engineering, bolstered by strong academic institutions, federal research facilities, and private sector investment.

The Moore-Miller administration has already invested over $1 billion in these sectors, and the trade mission aims to further strengthen existing trade partnerships and explore new opportunities for economic growth and workforce development.

Maryland already has strong economic ties with both Japan and South Korea, with nearly $8 billion in commercial transactions and bilateral trade taking place annually between the state and the two nations.

“This trade mission will help strengthen our relationship with Japan and South Korea and remind our partners about the benefits to doing business in Maryland,” said Maryland Department of Commerce Acting Secretary Harry Coker, Jr. “From our diverse and welcoming community, to our access to hundreds of global decision makers and foreign embassies, Maryland is strategically positioned to help international companies succeed when entering the U.S. market.”
