TOWSON, MD—The Baltimore County Fire Department has announced the passing of one of its members.
Fire Lt. Raymond Vargas Jr. died on Thursday, March 27, 2025 after a battle with cancer.
Lieutenant Vargas dedicated his life to serving and protecting Baltimore County residents. Hired in September 2013, he was assigned to the following stations: Eastview, Fullerton, Edgemere, Golden Ring, Sparrows Point, Dundalk, Hillendale, and, most recently, Perry Hall. Throughout his career, Ray built a reputation as a skilled firefighter, emergency medical technician, mentor, leader, and friend to many.
“Ray profoundly impacted the department and those privileged to work alongside him, and we deeply feel his loss,” the Baltimore County Fire Department said in a statement. “During this challenging time, the Baltimore County Fire Department extends its condolences to Lieutenant Vargas’ family, friends, and colleagues.”
Maryland’s Occupational Disease Presumption in workers’ compensation law classifies Lieutenant Vargas’ passing as a Line of Duty Death. This presumption recognizes that firefighters face an increased risk of certain cancers due to repeated exposure to toxic substances encountered in the line of duty. Under Maryland law, firefighters who have served for at least 10 years and are diagnosed with specific types of cancer—including those affecting the bladder, kidneys, and other vital organs—are presumed to have contracted the disease through their occupational exposure.
Ray is survived by his loving wife, Caroline Vargas, and their son, Gavin Vargas. He is also survived by his mother, Yvonne Medina, and his sisters, Yvette Vargas, Jenny Vargas, Jessica Perez, and Mary Vargas. Additionally, he leaves behind his beloved nieces and nephews: Jaron Pichardo, Aisha Vargas, Milton Torres, Jaden Diaz, Malik Pérez, Trinity Perez, Aliyah Perez, Genesis Vargas, Jordan Torres, Anastasia Torres, and Lyrik Yvonne, Valentina Mia Pantojas, and Amelia Snow Pantojas.
“His legacy of service, strength, and dedication will always inspire us,” the Baltimore County Fire Department said in a statement.
Viewings and a memorial service will be held at the Maryland State Fairgrounds on Wednesday, April 2, 2025.
