State Highway Administration begins first Operation Clean Sweep Maryland litter campaign of 2025 season

BALTIMORE, MD—The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration has begun its first Operation Clean Sweep Maryland of 2025. The effort will continue through Friday, March 29, 2025.

Although litter pickup is a routine part of daily roadway maintenance, Operation Clean Sweep Maryland is an all-hands on deck litter pickup and debris removal effort held multiple times throughout the state prior to high-travel holidays.

The State Highway Administration conducts Operation Clean Sweep Maryland before the high-travel holidays, such as Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day and the holiday season.

The goal of the project is to keep Maryland looking beautiful and encourage residents to partner with MDOT by putting trash where it belongs – in a trash can.

The State Highway Administration urges motorists to keep a bag in their vehicle and dispose of it in a trash receptacle when parking. Report excessive littering along roadways online here.

During this anti-litter effort, motorists are urged to slow down, pay attention and move over to protect crews working along highways.
