GAS PRICES: National average sees first rise in a month as summer switch stings

BALTIMORE, MD—The national average gas price in the U.S. has increased for the first time in over a month, according to GasBuddy. The rise is attributed to the seasonal transition to summer gasoline across many parts of the country.

The national average price for a gallon of gas rose 6.3 cents this week, reaching $3.08. This price is still 1.6 cents lower than last month and 42.5 cents lower than a year ago.

“This increase has nothing to do with politics or tariffs — which remain paused for now — but is instead the result of seasonality, and is something that happens almost every year,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

De Haan added that concerns over refinery maintenance have been muted so far this year due to broader economic concerns, and demand remains soft. However, he noted that areas in the Northeastern U.S. that have enjoyed lower gas prices compared to the national average will likely see prices rise in the coming weeks as they complete their transition to summer gasoline.

The national diesel price dropped by 0.9 cents last week to $3.549 per gallon.

Crude oil prices remained in the mid-to-upper $60s per barrel, fluctuating due to a variety of factors including fresh sanctions on Iran from the U.S., new talks to end Russia’s war on Ukraine, potential tariff adjustments on April 2, and OPEC+ restoring production in April. WTI crude oil rose 34 cents to $68.62 per barrel, slightly above last Monday’s $68.07 opening. Brent crude oil prices rose 35 cents to $72.51 per barrel, slightly above last week’s $71.46 per barrel.
