Dr. Tim Tooten dies at age 66

BALTIMORE, MD—Dr. Tim Tooten, a beloved community leader, pastor, reporter, professor, and valued Baltimore County resident, has passed away at 66 years of age.

Tooten began his illustrious broadcasting career in 1976 as a high school disc jockey in his hometown of Live Oak, Florida. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in communications from Florida State University and gained reporting experience in Washington, D.C., and West Virginia.

His career was marked by numerous accolades, including a prestigious National Headliner Award for his documentary “East is East,” which explored the experiences of African Americans growing up on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. He also won an Associated Press award for investigating discriminatory practices in private clubs in West Virginia.

Tooten’s work as a reporter extended beyond awards. He produced a half-hour documentary titled “Africa’s Maryland,” which prompted Maryland’s governor to establish a cultural, educational, and financial sister city agreement with two counties in Liberia.

He retired from reporting in 2023 after a remarkable career at WBAL-TV 11. Retirement afforded him more time for his expanding family and his first love, ministry, as he grew his church community at Harvest Christian Ministries. He dedicated himself to his ministry at Harvest Christian Ministries and served as an affiliate broadcasting professor at Loyola University Maryland and a mentor to young men at Perry Hall High School.

Dr. Tooten held a Doctor of Ministry degree from Virginia Seminary in Lynchburg and a Master of Arts degree from St. Mary’s Seminary and University Ecumenical Institute of Theology in Baltimore. He also served on the board of the Maryland Bible Society.

Tooten leaves behind his wife, Charleen, their three children, and grandchildren. His family, church, the Ravens, and the Baltimore community will forever cherish his love.

“Tim (Tooten) exemplified goodness,” said Councilman David Marks. “His work touched countless lives throughout Baltimore and beyond. He was a friend, neighbor, journalist, spiritual leader, and most importantly a devoted father and husband.”

“I will miss my friend. Condolences to his wife Charlene and his entire family.”
