BALTIMORE, MD—The man who has been arrested in connection with the brazen murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson has connections to Maryland.
Police arrested 26-year-old Luigi Mangione with a weapon “consistent with” the gun used in the killing, according to the New York City police commissioner.
Thompson, 50, died in a dawn ambush on Wednesday as he walked to the company’s annual investor conference at Manhattan hotel, according to the Associated Press. Thompson had traveled from Minnesota for the event.
Mangione holds both a Master’s and Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science from the University of Pennsylvania. He also gained recognition as the valedictorian at Gilman School in Baltimore. His work includes contributions to machine learning and robotics.
He was born and raised in Maryland, has ties to San Francisco, and his last known address is in Honolulu, Hawaii, Chief of Detective Joseph Kenny said at a news briefing.
Police apprehended Mangione after receiving a tip that he had been spotted at a McDonald’s near Altoona, Pennsylvania, about 233 miles west of New York City, AP reports.
One of Mangione’s purported book reviews can be viewed below.
