Police in Harford County use drones to catch theft-from-vehicle suspects

JOPPA, MD— Harford County Sheriff’s Office deputies, with the aid of advanced drone technology, have successfully apprehended two juveniles following a series of vehicle break-ins in Abingdon and Joppa.

At just after 4:15 a.m. on Monday, November 25, deputies responded to Deep Well Court in Abingdon for reports of thefts from vehicles, discovering that 21 vehicles had been rummaged through.

Shortly after, at just after 4:45 a.m., deputies were dispatched to Doncaster Road in Joppa for additional theft reports. Witnesses reported seeing two suspects dressed in black entering a black pickup truck.

Deputies located the vehicle on Falconer Road and initiated a brief pursuit. The suspects took the vehicle off-road on Barksdale Road, abandoning it before fleeing on foot. Inside the truck, deputies discovered a Glock 9mm handgun and numerous stolen items, including credit cards.

To quickly locate the fleeing suspects, the HCSO Drone Unit deployed a drone. The drone operator found the suspects hiding in a densely wooded area. This allowed deputies to move in and take the 15- and 16-year-old juveniles into custody without incident.

Deputies are continuing efforts to identify additional victims and stolen property, with plans to revisit the affected neighborhoods. Residents are reminded to lock their vehicles and report any suspicious activity.
