Police searching for vehicle involved in fatal I-97 hit-and-run that killed 7-year-old

MILLERSVILLE, MD—Maryland State Police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash that killed a 7-year-old boy in Anne Arundel County on Sunday night. The boy, who was a rear passenger in a 2011 Mazda 3, died after he was ejected from the vehicle and struck by another car.

Police said the crash occurred shortly before 7:30 p.m. on Interstate 97 north of MD Route 32. Troopers from the Glen Burnie Barrack responded to the scene. According to a preliminary investigation, the Mazda 3 was traveling northbound when the rear passenger opened the window and fell out of the vehicle, landing in the travel lanes. An oncoming Honda Civic then hit the child. The driver of the Honda Civic did not stop at the scene.

Emergency medical personnel pronounced the boy dead at the scene.

The driver of the Mazda 3, Lorraine O’Neill, 66, of Hagerstown, is believed by police to be the boy’s grandmother. Police are searching for a 2016-2019 Honda Civic with possible front-end damage, particularly to the left wheel well. The Maryland State Police Crash Team is investigating the incident.
