Maryland adds 2,700 total jobs in September, unemployment rate levels off

BALTIMORE, MD—Maryland’s employment sector gained 2,700 jobs in September, all in the private sector, according to preliminary data released Tuesday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. This brings the state’s total job growth to 1.2 percent since the beginning of the year, outpacing the national rate of 1.1 percent.

The growth was accompanied by an expansion of the state’s labor force by approximately 1,000 new workers. Despite a slight decrease in the number of unemployed individuals, Maryland’s unemployment rate remained unchanged at 2.9 percent. This rate remains significantly lower than the national average of 4.1 percent.

Five sectors led the job growth in September: Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation (2,100 jobs), Health Care and Social Assistance (1,800 jobs), Accommodation and Food Services (1,600 jobs), Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services (1,300 jobs), and Retail Trade (600 jobs).

Conversely, the sectors experiencing the most significant job losses were Administrative and Support and Waste Management and Remediation (-2,500 jobs), Transportation, Warehousing, and Utilities (-1,500 jobs), Construction (-400 jobs), Manufacturing (-300 jobs), and Other Services (-200 jobs).
