Electric vehicle bursts into flames in Joppa, damages home and other vehicles

JOPPA, MD—An electric vehicle burst into flames in Joppa on Tuesday night, injuring its owner and damaging several other vehicles as well as a home.

The blaze broke out at just after 11 p.m. on October 8 in the 100-block of Watertons Way.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal reports that the homeowners were preparing to go to bed when they heard a sound and discovered that their all-electric 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning vehicle was on fire. The owner sustained burns to his right hand while attempting to disconnect the vehicle from its charging cable.  He then used a garden hose to attempt to extinguish the fire.

The fire extended into the garage, extensively damaging the two vehicles inside, and both are considered a complete loss. Firefighters from Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company were able to contain the fire and prevented the blaze from extending into the home. The house sustained heat, smoke, soot, and water damage.

The family of four is displaced and is self-assisting. Harford County Special Operations Hazmat Team responded to the scene to assist with mitigating the battery disposal.
