Overlea High School student arrested after bringing loaded gun to school

OVERLEA, MD—A 15-year-old student from Overlea High School was arrested after allegedly bringing a loaded gun to school, Baltimore County officials say.

The school received a tip about a student with a gun on Wednesday, August 28th.  School resource officers found the 15-year-old and a loaded gun was recovered after the search.

The student was taken to a local police precinct for questioning.

Monica Sample, the school’s principal, sent a letter to parents and students reminding them of the safety rules regarding weapons in school.

“This morning, we received information that a student was in possession of a handgun,” wrote Sample. “School administration immediately followed safety protocols and our school resource officers located the student in question, conducted a search, and recovered a loaded handgun.”

“Possession of any type of weapon on school property is a serious offense and the student was arrested and taken to a local precinct.”

The letter goes on to say that students and parents should report any suspicious behavior or threats to school staff.

“We all have a role to play in ensuring that our school remains a safe and secure learning environment for our children,” Sample wrote.
