CCBC to hold candlelight vigil for former student slain at Rice University

ROSEDALE, MD—The Community College of Baltimore County will hold a candlelight vigil for a former student who was killed earlier this week at Rice University.

Andrea Rodriguez Avila, 21, of Nottingham, died on Monday in an apparent murder-suicide.  Investigators have learned that Avila and the suspect had been in a dating relationship.

Avila, a junior, had transferred from CCBC to Rice University and was majoring in political science.

CCBC has issued the following statement:



“The news of the tragic loss of Andrea Rodriguez Avila, a member of CCBC’s 2023 graduating class, is devastating. Her untimely death, which has received national attention, leaves many at CCBC heartbroken. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Andrea’s family and friends during this difficult time.

“Please join us in honoring the memory of Andrea at a candlelight vigil 7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 3 at CCBC Essex. Let us come together to support one another and remember the life of this bright young woman whose time with us was cut tragically too short.”
