Maryland unveils $6 million solar grant program

ANNAPOLIS, MD—The state of Maryland is launching a $6 million grant program to help homeowners, especially those in low-to-moderate-income households, afford solar power.

The Solar Energy Equity Program will provide grants of up to $25,000 per eligible household to help them pay for solar energy installation and repairs.

To be eligible for a grant, households must first undergo an energy audit and make significant energy efficiency upgrades.

Participating solar service providers will offer free solar array installations to eligible homeowners.

The program is a partnership between the Maryland Energy Administration and nonprofit organizations that work to promote clean energy.

“Maryland is leading the way in the transition to clean energy, and we will leave no one behind,” said Gov. Wes Moore. “We are excited to work alongside all of our partners to invest in communities with the greatest need throughout our state.”

The Solar Energy Equity Program is expected to generate new jobs and help families save money on energy bills.

It is hoped that the program will also help Maryland reach its clean energy goals.

“It isn’t enough for Marylanders to see themselves in the consequences of climate inaction, they must also see themselves in the progress — and that’s what this partnership is about,” Moore said.
