ANNAPOLIS, MD—Daniel Phillips has been named the permanent director of the Maryland State Department of Assessments and Taxation, Governor Wes Moore announced, filling a position in which Phillips had been serving as an interim director for the past two months.
Phillips is a 35-year veteran of the department and holds a degree in business administration from Salisbury University, Moore said in a statement. He is also a member of the International Association of Assessing Officers and past president of the Maryland Association of Assessing Officers.
Phillips said he was honored by the appointment.
“Since I stepped into the interim director position two months ago, I have been focused on building partnerships across government, supporting our staff, and providing efficient service for SDAT customers statewide,” he said. “I am excited to continue this work.”
Moore also announced the appointment of Joy Hatchette as interim commissioner of the Maryland Insurance Administration.
Hatchett is currently an associate commissioner for the Consumer Education and Advocacy Unit at the Maryland Insurance Administration and previously served in the Consumer Complaints and an assistant attorney general positions in the law firm of Gordon, Feinblatt, Rothman, Hoffberger.
She will serve as interim commissioner of the Maryland Insurance Administration until a permanent successor can be named.
The announcement comes as Moore is seeking to fill a number of key state positions including insurance commissioner, tax department director, and comptroller.
