BALTIMORE, MD—With the Fourth of July approaching, the personal-finance website WalletHub this week released its report on 2024’s Most Patriotic States in America, to determine where Americans have the most red, white and blue pride.
Maryland cracked the top ten, coming in at No. 9 on the list. Virginia came in at No. 1 followed by Alaska at No. 2.
WalletHub compared the 50 states across 13 key indicators of patriotism. The data set ranges from the state’s military enlistees and veterans to the share of adults who voted in the 2020 presidential election to AmeriCorps volunteers per capita. Below are some additional highlights from the report.
Patriotism in Maryland (1=Most Patriotic; 25=Avg.):
- Overall Rank: 9th
- 21st – Average Number of Military Enlistees per 1,000 Civilian Adults
- 15th – Active-Duty Military Personnel per 100,000 Civilian Adults
- 5th – Peace Corps Volunteers per Capita
- 5th – % of Adults Who Voted in 2020 Presidential Election
- 29th – Volunteer Rate
- 1st – U.S. History or Civics Education Requirement
- 14th – Volunteer Hours per Resident
- 25th – AmeriCorps Volunteers per Capita
“The most patriotic states have a lot of residents who serve or have served in the armed forces, high voter turnouts during elections, and a high share of the population volunteering with national or local organizations,” said WalletHub analyst Cassandra Happe. “Patriotism also isn’t concentrated in any one particular area – the top states are located in vastly different geographic regions.”
