Weis Markets to install AEDs in stores, employees receive Stop the Bleed training

NOTTINGHAM, MD—Weis Markets locations are taking customer safety very seriously.

The regional supermarket chain will soon have an automated external defibrillator (AED) available in each of its Maryland stores. Maryland House Bill 288 – The Joe Sheya Act requires each owner and operator of a “grocery store” or a specified restaurant, beginning January 1, 2025, to place an AED in a prominent area (accessible to employees and customers) and maintain its functionality.  Delegate Bonnie Cullison sponsored the legislation.

The Weis Markets store located at 7927 Belair Road in Fullerton (21236) was the first store to install an AED, according to Delegate Carl Jackson.

In addition, each Weis employee is also undergoing life-saving Stop the Bleed training.

Last year, nearly 3,000 Weis Markets associates took part in the Stop the Bleed training course, which taught simple steps on how to stop or slow life-threatening bleeding.  Bleeding-control kits are strategically placed throughout all Weis Markets store locations.

“The Stop the Bleed training equips our community and local businesses with life-saving skills to immediately respond to an emergency,” said Trauma Education Coordinator for Geisinger Medical Center Deb Erdman. “We’re proud to continue providing this resource to our communities and the collaboration with Weis Markets and their employees. This is a great example of how this program can have a great impact on our neighbors.”
