Baltimore County man set to pay off home mortgage with $50,000 Powerball prize

CHASE, MD—A Baltimore resident told Maryland Lottery officials that he tends to wait for a big Powerball jackpot before he plays the game. And although he hasn’t captured the jackpot, which now sits at an estimated annuity of $1.09 billion, he is quite content walking away with a $50,000 prize.

The retiree bought his lucky ticket at Chase Plaza Liquors located at 12546 Eastern Avenue (21220). He bought a $6 quick-pick ticket for the March 27 drawing.

The Baltimore County man learned the next day, from his wife, that he had won a third-tier prize after he gave the ticket to her to check. She returned to Chase Plaza Liquors and scanned the ticket for a win on both the Maryland Lottery vending machine and countertop scanner. Both machines informed her of the $50,000 win. The husband had matched four white balls and the Powerball.

There isn’t a long to-do list for his winnings. The happy winner told officials that he plans to pay off his home mortgage with the prize.

No one has hit the Powerball jackpot in 39 drawings. It sits at an estimated annuity of $1.09 billion for the Wednesday, April 3 drawing, with an estimated cash option of $527.3 million (before taxes).
