Maryland adds 3,600 private sector jobs, unemployment rate increases in February

BALTIMORE, MD—The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics on Friday released state jobs and unemployment data. According to the preliminary survey data, Maryland added 3,600 private-sector jobs and the unemployment rate increased to 2.4% in February, the fourth-lowest rate in the nation.

Sectors that created jobs include: Private Education and Health Services (2,000); Leisure and Hospitality (1,400); Mining, Logging, and Construction (400); Other Services (300); Information (100); Professional and Business Services (100); and Trade, Transportation, and Utilities (100).



Sectors that experienced a decline include: The public sector (1,800); Financial Activities (600); and Manufacturing (200).

January’s employment growth was revised from a gain of 6,800 total jobs to a gain of 6,000 total jobs. Since the start of the new year (December 2023), Maryland has gained 7,800 jobs. This rate of growth (0.3%) is in line with the national growth.
