Fatal street racing crash in Baltimore County leaves 1 dead

OWINGS MILLS, MD—Maryland State Police are investigating a fatal Sunday crash linked to street racing in Baltimore County.

The victim has been identified as Leo Anthony Brooks Jr., 56, of Reisterstown. He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical services personnel. According to a preliminary investigation, Brooks was the driver of a 2017 Mercedes believed to be engaged in a street race with an unidentified vehicle.



Troopers responded to the crash at just after 4:45 a.m. on March 17 along northbound I-795 at McDonogh Road in Owings Mills. Investigators suspect Brooks lost control of the vehicle while speeding and struck a 2006 Jeep Liberty.

The driver of the Jeep was not involved in street racing and no other injuries were reported.

Officials say the deadly crash is a reminder of the dangers of speeding and aggressive driving. According to the MDOT MVA’s Maryland Highway Safety Office, an average of 84 people died and nearly 5,600 others were injured on Maryland roads between 2018 and 2022 due to speeding or aggressive driving.
