Two injured, two pets killed in Essex fire

ESSEX, MD—An early morning two-alarm fire in Essex sent a civilian and firefighter to area hospitals with minor injuries.

Fire crews responded to the unit block of Warren Road (21221) at around 2 a.m. on Wednesday, January 17, for a report of a dwelling fire. At the scene, firefighters found fire visible from the rear of the home on multiple levels.

The fire spread to two additional homes and displaced seventeen residents and eight animals. During search efforts, crews unfortunately located two deceased cats and dogs. Due to the extreme temperatures, fire crews temporarily sheltered affected residents at Essex Elementary School.

The Red Cross has responded to assist.

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.
