Councilman Marks blasts School Board for blocking popular redistricting plan

NOTTINGHAM, MD—Baltimore County Councilman David Marks on Wednesday night issued the following statement regarding the Board of Education of Baltimore County’s postponement of the vote on a middle school redistricting plan.

“On Tuesday night, the Board of Education postponed a motion offered by Fifth District School Board member Julie Henn that would have finalized a middle school redistricting plan for the Eastside.

“The option that was the heart of this plan was supported by 71 percent of respondents in a survey. It was the culmination of months of public meetings, and tens of thousands of dollars, to design a proposal that respected historical community boundaries and neighborhood diversity.

“Now, some want to ignore the overwhelming support of those most affected by redistricting. They want to block it – ‘the proposal doesn’t go far enough!’ We know the outcome some want: a plan that will carve up school districts and thwart the will of those most impacted.

“The process worked. Our parents and students deserve consistency. Finalize a map that respects the will of the people.”
