WHITE MARSH, MD—The Maryland Department of the Environment will hold a public hearing to discuss the proposed Evans Funeral Chapel crematorium that is set to open in White Marsh.
The public hearing will take place at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 at the White Marsh Volunteer Fire Company to discuss the proposed facility, planned for 11543 Philadelphia Road.
“Since this plan was unveiled, I have done my best to keep the community informed and take steps to minimize the impacts on businesses and neighborhoods,” said Councilman Marks. “MDE must approve the proposal for the crematorium to operate.”
A bill introduced by Councilman Marks that would have prohibited the construction of crematoriums within 500 feet of any residences was tabled at last week’s Baltimore County Council meeting.
Earlier this year, Evans Funeral Chapel announced plans to construct a crematorium at 11543 Philadelphia Road. The White Marsh-Cowenton Community Association then created an online petition opposing the plan.
A public meeting was then planned and subsequently postponed once Councilman Marks announced plans to introduce his piece of legislation.
Residents had voiced concerns over the potential for toxic materials and smoke to be released into nearby neighborhoods.
The public is invited to attend this latest hearing.
White Marsh Volunteer Fire Company is located at 10331 Philadelphia Road in White Marsh.
