BCPS recommends closing Golden Ring Middle School to students; public hearing set for May 3

TOWSON, MD—Baltimore County Public Schools officials have announced that they plan to close Golden Ring Middle School.

As part of its strategy to improve learning environments and reduce overcrowding in northeastern county middle schools, BCPS plans to close Golden Ring Middle School to students and repurpose the building for future use.

BCPS Superintendent Dr. Darryl L. Williams notified the Board of Education of the plan at the Board’s April 18 meeting. Officials say the move is part of an ongoing adjustment of attendance boundaries impacting central and northeast area middle schools; the new boundary lines will efficiently utilize the additional capacity at new Northeast Middle School and provide capacity relief in other schools. The closure of Golden Ring’s program is scheduled for the 2024 – 2025 school year.

The Board will hold a public hearing about the proposed closing at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 3, 2023, at the Eastern Technical High School auditorium, located at 1100 Mace Avenue in Essex (21221). The public can sign up to speak at the public hearing beginning at 5:30 p.m. on May 3rd. The Board will vote on the recommendation to close the school at its May 16 meeting.

While the future use of the school building on Kenwood Avenue has not yet been determined, its 900 students will be among those attending new schools as a result of a recommendation for new boundary lines to be voted on by the Board at its upcoming June 13 meeting.

Additional information on the recommended plan, is available on the Central and Northeast Area Middle School Boundary Study website.
