WHITE MARSH, MD—The Maryland Department of the Environment’s informational public meeting that had been scheduled for April 25, 2023 to discuss the crematorium proposed by Evans Funeral Home for 11543 Philadelphia in White Marsh has been postponed.
The meeting was postponed after the Baltimore County Council introduced legislation (Bill 23-25) which will limit the distance that a crematorium may be constructed in relationship to a residential area. No future crematorium will be allowed to be built within 500 feet of any residential area, should the bill pass.
This bill was introduced at the County Council’s April 3, 2023 meeting and will be discussed at the Work Session on Tuesday, April 25, 2023 at 4 p.m.
Last month, the White Marsh-Cowenton Community Association created an online petition opposing the crematorium proposal citing safety concerns.
In the petition, created by WMCCA president Heather Patti, the organization cites studies showing that crematoriums emit gases and volatile organic compounds including carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, mercury, hydrocarbons and particulate matter/fine dust.
Final Reading and vote on Bill 23-25 will occur at the Legislative Session on Monday, May 1, 2023 at 6 p.m.
