Planned Easter egg hunt at Middle River cemetery raises eyebrows

MIDDLE RIVER, MD—Some community members have expressed concerns after a Middle River cemetery announced plans to hold an Easter egg hunt next month.

Holly Hills Memorial Gardens will host the event at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 8, 2023.

The “1st annual” Easter egg hunt will feature candy-filled eggs, light refreshments, prizes for the top hunters, and of course, the Easter Bunny.

Some residents and elected officials have voiced their opinions as to whether a cemetery is an ideal place for such an event.

“I have some fundamental concerns about this event whether it is on graves or not,” said Delegate Ryan Nawrocki. “The cemetery, at least in my mind, is supposed to be a place of solitude and reverence. I’ll be reaching out this week to discuss as I’m not sure that everyone is going to feel this is the best way to remember their loved ones.”

Holly Hills representative, meanwhile, say that the event will not disturb the graves at the cemetery, but will instead take place in an empty field on the property.

“This event is not on or near anyone’s loved ones graves,” reads a statement on social media.  “This is a community event for children.”

Holly Hills Memorial Gardens is located at 10201 Bird River Road in Middle River (21220).
