Maryland Flag lowered to half-staff to honor six highway workers killed in I-695 crash

ANNAPOLIS, MD—Governor Wes Moore has ordered the Maryland Flag to be lowered to half-staff effective immediately.  It will remain at half-staff until sunset on Friday, March 24, 2023.

The flag is being lowered in honor of the six Maryland highway construction workers who were killed in Wednesday’s tragic accident on I-695.



Rolando Ruiz, 46, of Laurel; Carlos Orlando Villatoro Escobar, 43, of Frederick; Jose Armando Escobar, 52, of Frederick; Mahlon Simmons III, 31, of Union Bridge; Mahlon Simmons II, 52, of Union Bridge; and Sybil Lee Dimaggio, 46, of Glen Burnie were killed on Wednesday when a driver lost control and entered a construction zone on the west side of I-695 and struck them.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
