ESSEX, MD—When his alarm buzzed early in the morning on January 5, Christian Thomas had to get his bearings. Now in the middle of his first year at Yale University, he has grown accustomed to waking up considerably later than he did as a high school student.
Why in the middle of his winter break was his alarm going off? Because he devoted several days of his break to serving as a substitute teacher for Baltimore County Public Schools. “I forgot how early you have to wake up for school,” he says.
Thomas, a 2022 graduate of Eastern Technical High School, is well-known throughout the school system as the 2021-2022 student member of the Board of Education of Baltimore County and former host of two shows on BCPS-TV.
