BALTIMORE, MD—With Americans having donated nearly $485 billion in 2021, up 4% from the previous year, the personal-finance website WalletHub this week released its report on the Most Charitable States for 2023.
Maryland came in at No. 2 on the list, with Utah ranking at No. 1 and Minnesota ranking at No. 3 on the list. North Dakota and Oregon rounded out the top five, with Arizona placing at the bottom of the list.
To determine where the most generous Americans are inspiring others to be more selfless, WalletHub compared the 50 states based on 19 key indicators of charitable behavior. The data set ranges from the volunteer rate to the share of income donated to the share of sheltered homeless.

- 26th – % of Population Who Donated Time
- 1st – % of Population Who Donated Money
- 24th – % of Population Collecting/Distributing Food
