Maryland man struck, killed after being kicked out of Lyft on Delaware highway

DEWEY BEACH, DE—A Maryland man was struck and killed after being kicked out of a Lyft on a Delaware highway over the weekend.

Delaware State Police say the incident occurred early Sunday morning on southbound Coastal Highway (Route 1) in Dewey Beach.

At around 1:45 a.m. on July 24, the victim and five of his friends hired a Lyft driver to pick them up in Dewey Beach and take them back to their residence in Bethany Beach. As the group was traveling southbound on Coastal Highway all in the same vehicle, a disagreement occurred between the group and the Lyft operator.

The Lyft driver terminated the ride and stopped in the middle of the southbound left lane and demanded that all six passengers exit the vehicle.

That’s when another vehicle that was traveling southbound in the left lane on Coastal Highway approached the stopped Lyft vehicle (possibly a white Honda Pilot). As that driver switched lanes to avoid striking the rear of the Lyft vehicle, he failed to see the pedestrian who had just exited. The driver hit the pedestrian and immediately pulled over. The Lyft vehicle fled southbound on Coastal Highway immediately after the crash.

The 43-year-old male pedestrian, from Clarksburg, MD was pronounced dead at the scene. Identification of the victim is pending.

The other five passengers were not injured after exiting the Lyft vehicle.

The operator or the Lyft vehicle has not yet been identified and the crash remains under investigation
