BALTIMORE, MD—The Maryland Court of Appeals has upheld the murder conviction of Dawnta Harris in the killing of Baltimore County Police Department Officer Amy Caprio.
Officer Caprio was run down in the line of duty in May 2018 while investigating a suspicious vehicle connected to a burglary on Linwen Way in Nottingham.
“Justice prevailed again today in the case against the suspect charged in the heinous murder of Police Officer First Class Amy Caprio,” said Police Chief Melissa Hyatt on Thursday. “I want to thank the Baltimore County State’s Attorney’s Office and all of the members of our Department who worked tirelessly to bring justice for Amy. Please continue to keep her family, friends, and colleagues in your thoughts and prayers.”
In May 2018, Officer Caprio ordered Harris out of his vehicle and he refused. When she drew her weapon, Harris, who was 16 years old at the time, ran over her, killing her.
Dawnta Harris was convicted in May 2019 and sentenced to life in prison in August 2019.
