Middle River teacher honored with statewide award

TOWSON, MD—Five BCPS teachers have earned Outstanding Teacher as Leader in Gifted and Talented Education Awards from the Maryland Gifted and Talented Advisory Council’s Excellence in Gifted and Talented Education (EGATE) program.

One BCPS student was honored with a Student Accomplishment in Gifted and Talented Education Award.



The honored teachers are:

  • Ashley Battersby, Grade 5 math teacher, Riverview Elementary School
  • Sheryl Metzbower, Grade 4 teacher, Carroll Manor Elementary School
  • Stephanie Stefanik, Grade 5 teacher, Mays Chapel Elementary School
  • Tracy Tegeler, Grade 3 teacher, Oliver Beach Elementary School
  • Carolyn Reid, resource teacher, ESOL Office

The honored student is Keneth Martinez-Sandoval, Grade 12, Lansdowne High School.

The teachers and student will be honored during the advisory council’s virtual awards ceremony on Wednesday, February 23.

In its award letter to the honorees, the council wrote: “It warms our hearts to know that there are so many outstanding people working on behalf of our gifted and talented students and so many hard working, impressive gifted students.”
