Baltimore resident claims $2 million New Year’s Day Powerball prize

BALTIMORE, MD—Maryland’s first $2 million Powerball winner of 2022 has claimed the second-tier prize. The Baltimore resident, who won the prize in the January 1, 2022 drawing, just learned of his $2,000,008 win on Valentine’s Day.

The 66-year-old was still in disbelief when he walked into the Winner’s Circle at Maryland Lottery headquarters and saw the oversized check with his name on it.

“Look at that,” he kept repeating, with a big smile on his face. “You just have to have patience, and good things will come.”

The happy retiree put his tickets away after purchasing them at Sam’s Lobby Shop in Baltimore and didn’t think to check them until this week. He scanned the $20 quick-pick ticket using the Maryland Lottery’s app, and saw he matched four of the white balls and the Powerball number. Since he had added the Power Play option to his ticket, the $1 million second-tier prize doubled to $2 million, and a separate line of numbers on the ticket won an additional $8.

The avid player looks forward to using some of his winnings to buy a new car.

He isn’t the only winner. Sam’s Lobby Shop located at 10 North Calvert Street in Baltimore will receive a $5,000 bonus from the Maryland Lottery for selling the $2 million winning ticket with Power Play.
