Underground fire causes heavy smoke, fires at Carney Village Shopping Center

UPDATE: The fire is now under control.  Maryland Department of the Environment crews remain on scene.

CARNEY, MD—Hazmat crews are responding to an underground fire at the Carney Village Shopping Center.

At just after 9:00 a.m., welders reportedly started an underground fire at 9616 Harford Road (21234).

A vehicle is reportedly on fire and flammable chemicals are burning in the sewers.

Smoke is being reported in several structures, including the Weis Markets.  Several businesses have been evacuated.

The large underground fire has resulted in smoke pouring from several manholes.

No injuries are being reported at this time.  Residents should avoid the area.
