Investigation into Baltimore County shooting spree continues

NOTTINGHAM, MD—Detectives from the Baltimore County Police Department are continuing to investigate the fatal shootings that occurred last week in Essex and Phoenix/Glen Arm.

Investigators believe that on March 28, 2021, 27-year-old Joshua Green shot five people, killing four of them. According to family members, Green struggled with behavioral health issues.

Green shot three people at the Royal Farms store in the 1600-block of Middleborough Road in Essex (21221) at just before 6:45 a.m. on Sunday morning. Two victims were pronounced dead at the scene and one victim was injured.

According to detectives, the suspect left the store and returned home to the 1400-block of Shadetree Road in Essex (21221) where he proceeded to set his apartment on fire. Police later found Green outside his apartment complex, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

At just after 3:15 p.m., detectives then traveled to the home of the suspect’s parents in the 1400-block of Manor Road in Glen Arm/Phoenix (21131), where they discovered the two parents deceased. Both individuals appeared to have been shot.

The deceased victims have been identified as 43-year-old Silvesta Daye Jr. (a customer at the Royal Farms store); 62-year-old Alpha Smith (who was sitting inside of her vehicle outside of the Royal Farms store); and 58-year-old Douglas Green & 62-year-old Olivia Green (the parents of the deceased suspect).

In addition to investigative resources, the Baltimore County Police Department deployed its Mobile Crisis Team to offer support and resources to those impacted by these incidents.

Police patrols have also been increased in these communities and personnel from the police precinct are continuing their outreach efforts with residents, businesses, and the faith-based community.

This past weekend, Police Chief Melissa Hyatt joined County Executive Johnny Olszewski Jr. at a community public safety meeting in Essex. The meeting was organized by the Baltimore Chapter of the Guardian Angels and held at St. Stephens AME Church.

The Baltimore County Police Department will continue to provide updates to the community as new information becomes available.
