WEEKLY ZIP CODE REPORT: Maryland COVID-19 hospitalizations rise, positivity rate falls

NOTTINGHAM, MD—The Maryland Department of Health on Friday reported that the statewide COVID-19 positivity rate fell while total hospitalizations rose over the past week.

Overall Metrics

As of Friday, December 25, 2020, there have been 263,160 cases of novel coronavirus in Maryland. The state has now conducted 5,507,948 tests, including more than 42,000 tests over the past 24 hours.

The statewide positivity rate stands at 7.11%, a decrease from last Friday’s 7,77%.

There have been 5,493 related deaths and 1,721 individuals are currently hospitalized – an increase of 35 hospitalizations since last Friday.  A total of 424 ICU beds are currently in use, an increase of 25 beds since last Friday.

More than 70% of Maryland’s COVID-19 fatalities have been among those over 70 years of age (3,955/5,493).

Thus far, the mortality rate for coronavirus in Maryland remains under 4.00% for those residents under 70 years of age. The mortality rate for all age groups continued to fall or flatten over the past week.
