Baltimore County Public Schools program specialist appointed to Maryland Family Engagement Coalition

TOWSON, MD—Susan Hahn, a program specialist in the Baltimore County Public Schools’ Office of Family and Community Engagement, has been appointed to serve on the Maryland Family Engagement Coalition.

Established in 2012, the coalition is comprised of child development experts, policymakers, early care and education providers, and community advocates seeking to increase use of family engagement practices that improve outcomes for children, parents, and families.

“This year has demonstrated, perhaps more than any other, that families are integral and valued partners with BCPS,” said BCPS Superintendent Dr. Darryl L. Williams. “Sue Hahn is one of the behind-the-scenes leaders supporting schools in more effectively connecting with families and forging partnerships with area businesses and community organizations to make more resources available to our families and schools. We are proud that her expertise has been recognized by the Maryland Family Engagement Coalition.”

“I believe that serving in the coalition will allow me to raise awareness of all the great work BCPS is doing to support families,” said Hahn. “I will also be able to bring back information and ideas from school systems around the state.”

Hahn, a Towson resident, has worked in family engagement positions for BCPS for more than 20 years. She developed the first-ever BCPS Parent University, which offers in-person and virtual workshops, online resources, a television show, and more to support caregiver learning and engagement in student learning. As program specialist, she also oversees the BCPS Parentmobile, an award-winning mobile resource center for caregivers. In partnership with community partners, she has coordinated a wide-range of events and initiatives such as health fairs, information fairs for Spanish-speaking families, summer expos, and parenting education series.

Hahn also serves as a BCPS liaison to the PTA Council of Baltimore County and on numerous boards and committees within BCPS and in the community, including serving as co-chair of the new System Improvement Team for Family Engagement. She also developed the MSDE credit course “Developing and Implementing Effective Parent Involvement Programs.”

Hahn earned a bachelor’s degree in corporate communications with a certificate in leadership and social change from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland (now Notre Dame of Maryland University).
