Officer in Essex police-involved shooting identified

ESSEX, MD—Police have identified the officer involved in a shooting on Skipjack Court in Essex last weekend.

At just before 10:45 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, officers responded to the unit block of Skipjack Court (21221) for a report of a crowd of people in a parking.



The first arriving officer was confronted with an armed suspect and subsequently fired his weapon.

Robert Johnson Jr., 29, of the unit block of Championship Court in Owings Mills (21117) died from injuries he sustained in the shooting.  A second subject was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

The officer involved has been identified as Police Officer First Class Knight, a 24-year veteran of the force permanently assigned to the Baltimore County Police Department’s Essex Precinct. He has no prior officer-involved shootings.

Officer Knight is currently on routine administrative leave.
