CDC now says COVID-19 ‘does not spread easily’ via contaminated surfaces

INOTTINGHAM, MD—In yet another stunning reversal, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now say that the novel coronavirus does not easily travel from surface to surface.

It’s not immediately apparent as to when the CDC changed course on this advisory, but on their newly-updated COVID-19 page, “touching surfaces or objects” is now listed under ways in which the “virus does not easily spread.”

This statement will likely come as quite a shock to those who have been wiping down their mail and groceries for the past few weeks.

“COVID-19 is a new disease and we are still learning about how it spreads. It may be possible for COVID-19 to spread in other ways, but these are not thought to be the main ways the virus spreads,” according to the CDC.

This marks the second major COVID-19 reversal to come from health officials in recent days. Earlier this week, data released by the CDC showed that the hospitalization rate for coronavirus was actually lower than the hospitalization rate for this year’s flu season.
