TOWSON, MD—Three Baltimore County Public Schools educators have been accepted to present at the Center for the Promotion of Social and Emotional Learning national conference, which will be held May 18 – 20 at the Renaissance Baltimore Harborplace Hotel in Baltimore.
The BCPS presenters are Shane Jensen, music specialist, Office of Music and Dance Education; Dr. Amalio Nieves, executive director, Department of Social-Emotional Support, and Abeer Shinnawi, a resource teacher, Office of Social Studies. They will present “Peeling Back the Labels: Uncovering What’s Hidden and Cultivating Inclusive Conversations” on Tuesday, May 19 at 3 p.m.
According to Nieves, during the session, participants will explore how race, religion, gender roles, gender identity and expression, community, and family all play a part in establishing labels that may be hard to peel away. Then, an examination of relationship skills, self-advocacy, and decision-making will reveal actionable steps to stimulate and promote awareness.
