Parkville pair donates portion of $100,000 scratch-off prize to children’s center

PARKVILLE, MD—Angela and Tom Kosinski probably thought that the most excitement in their Baltimore County house this week would come from their new puppy. Little did they know that a string of smaller Maryland Lottery wins would lead them to a $100,000 winning 50X The Cash scratch-off prize.

Prior to a few weeks ago, they rarely played the lottery. However, after winning $150 on a few scratch-offs, the Parkville pair bought more instant tickets and won again. Then, last Sunday, Angela had an idea.

“I told Tom that we should go to J Convenience since they always have a big variety of tickets,” Angela told Lottery officials. “Tom likes to slowly scratch the tickets, so we scratched a few on Sunday when we got home and waited until Monday to scratch the rest.”

On Monday, Angela had two games left to scratch. She started scratching the 50X The Cash instant ticket.

“At this point, we hadn’t won anything big with this batch of tickets, and I was starting to think our luck had run dry,” she said. “I then started scratching the numbers randomly, saw I matched the 34 and then saw a lot of zeroes within the prize.”

Angela couldn’t believe her eyes. She quickly yelled for Tom and showed him the instant ticket.

“I saw above the 34 was a $500 prize, and at first, I thought that’s what she was showing me,” Tom said. “Then, I realized it was $100,000!”

The couple double-checked the instant ticket on the Maryland Lottery’s app to confirm the prize.

Angela and Tom, who both work for the Baltimore County government, have big plans for their prize. They agreed that the first thing they wanted to do was give back to others. The Parkville duo called Mix 106.5’s Radiothon for Johns Hopkins Children’s Center and made a donation. The funds also will go toward a son’s college tuition and a daughter’s wedding, will let them pay off a truck loan, make home improvements and boost their savings.

J Convenience also has reason to celebrate. The Parkville retailer located at 8765 Satyr Hill Road earns a bonus of $1,000 for selling a top-prize winning scratch-off in the game.
