Carney liquor store sells winning $1 million Md. Lottery scratch-off

CARNEY, MD—After breaking his foot on the job, “Millionaire Mechanic” had good reason to believe things were going downhill – but that’s when he bought the lucky Maryland Lottery scratch-off ticket that changed everything.

“I love the work I do, so breaking my foot on the job hurt me in more ways than one,” he said while still sporting a walking boot on his injured foot. “Because I couldn’t go to work, I started to play the Lottery.”

Little did the 55-year-old Baltimore resident know that his luck was about to take a major upswing.

The “Millionaire Mechanic” began playing the $30 $2,000,000 Richer and $2,000,000 Mega Bucks scratch-offs and won four $500 prizes within two weeks.

With those prizes under his belt, he spoke with a friend who told him to try the $20 Max A Million because a number of its $1 million top prizes were still unclaimed. So the next day, the soon-to-be-millionaire went to Carney Liquors on his broken foot and bought a couple of tickets, which turned into more of a chore than he thought.

“I went in, stood in line, and studied the box of scratch-offs,” he recalled. “When it was my turn I selected the Max A Million just as my friend suggested, but when the clerk tried to pull it out, the ticket got stuck. That’s when I said out loud, ‘This must be a winner because it doesn’t want to come out!’”

It took two more employees and the manager to get the ticket loose from the dispenser. “Millionaire Mechanic” then headed home and scratched it. He instantly knew he was a winner.

“It was unbelievable!” he said with a smile. “I called my mother immediately and told her I thought I was a winner. She told me to sign the back of it and take it back to the retailer and ask them to scan it again, which I did. I told my boss and he asked if I was coming back to work. I love my job, so I will certainly go back to work. I even took a photo with my boss before I came in today!”

“Millionaire Mechanic” has big plans for his newfound wealth. Our lucky winner has started looking for a new place to live, lined up bills to pay off, and he is even looking to upgrade his car but he won’t stop there.

“I used to have a boat when I was a boy growing up in Middle River. My father and I would go fishing for barracuda and crabbing.” He said with tears in his eyes, “It would be nice to have a boat again.”

The lucky winner isn’t the only one with a reason to celebrate, Carney Liquors located at 9222 Harford Road is a big winner too. For selling the lucky ticket, the retailer will receive a $1,000 bonus from the Maryland Lottery.
