ROSEDALE, MD—Maryland State Police responded to a minor, two-vehicle crash on Monday morning involving a van transporting nine prisoners.
Seven of the prisoners were taken by ambulance to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore. The other two prisoners were transported by ambulance to MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center. All nine prisoners remain under police watch.
The two correctional officers in the van were uninjured and have responded to both hospitals to guard the prisoners while they are receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained in the incident.
State troopers have also been deployed to both hospitals to assist with the prisoner watch.
Authorities say the prisoners were being transported by a private transportation company from Tennessee. At around 8:00 a.m. on Monday, the van was traveling southbound on I-95 when it was rear-ended by a passenger vehicle near the I-695 exit in Rosedale. Police believe all nine passengers were secured in the van when the incident occurred.
The individual driving the passenger vehicle is not being identified at this time. Charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.
