MIDDLE RIVER, MD – The Bowleys Quarters Marine Emergency Team rescued a lost kayaker earlier this week.
On Wednesday, June 12, 2019, at about 6:45 p.m., the unit received word that a kayaker had been missing for over 4 hours. Based on last known location information provided by the caller, a search of the Gunpowder River in the area of Carroll Island was conducted by three team members.
After a 15-minute search of the area, the lost kayaker was located on an eastern shore of Carroll Island. He had suffered a mechanical breakdown of his pedal kayak and high winds had caused him to become marooned on the remote island.
The kayaker and his vessel were taken aboard Marine Unit 217. He was examined and the team provided him with fluids and a blanket.
He was then taken to his original launching point where his journey had begun about 10 hours earlier.
