An Essex man has been hospitalized following a Sunday incident in which he violently confronted police and emergency medical providers.

The individual has been identified as Tawon Boyd, 21, of Essex.

Police responded to Aikin Circle just after 3 a.m. on September 18 for a report of a disturbance after receiving 911 calls. A man and a woman were heard screaming at each other on the 911 calls.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the man and woman screaming at each other. The woman reported to police officers that her boyfriend had been acting “crazy” and was under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

Boyd appeared to be confused and paranoid, sweating profusely, and when police attempted to talk to him, he ran to multiple marked police cars and tried to get inside. He also began banging on neighbors’ doors.

Police continued to try to talk to Boyd and opted to take him for an emergency evaluation. Boyd refused to obey police orders and engaged officers in a physical struggle.

Three police officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries, and Boyd also sustained injuries. The officers called for medical assistance during the struggle.

Medical personnel arrived at about 3:30 a.m. The man was transported to a local hospital.

An administrative investigation will be conducted by both the police and fire departments.
